Fusion is a compilation of things which are not contemporary or usable anymore.
Much of our grandparents cardboard luggage is still around but very rarely is it still used for it’s original purpose, travel.
Now Its very often used to treasure things it collects dust in basements or attics.
The cardboard body itself is light, roomy and stable, it fulfills the first demands of a good suitcase, but fill it with clothes and other items and it quickly becomes a heavy and unloved travel companion. By adding wheels and a handle to the cardboard body the old suitcase once again lives up to the expectations of todays frequent traveler.
The wheels and handles needed for this update are easily acquired from old and broken household items such as vacuum cleaners, prams and playing vehicles (toys). The ones shown in the following pictures include parts from an old lawnmower and a scooter. A coat of fresh paint to the in- and outside gives the body more stability, makes it water resistant and gives a fresh brand new look.
A custom made Fusion Luggage went to the Kunsthalle Mannheim in 2015, it is used to transport materials to and from schools in town. The museum initiated a program to provide the city’s primary school children with art and museum education. Before the classroom visits the museum, the museum visits the school.
A pedagogue from the museum prepares the children for their excursion, through activities they communicate the purpose and relevance of an institution like a museum and build an age relevant understanding of art and culture. The visit allows the museum to provide the children with a relevant instruction making them curious adding to the children having a positive and impressive day out at the museum.
